Campus View Elementary in Saanich, School District 61, is proud to host its fourth annual community EarthFest celebration in April 2015. This event, held on the grounds of the school, began as the brainchild of a grade 3 student at Campus View who wanted to do something for the environment. Over the last few years, EarthFest has grown into a large community event involving students, staff, First Nations, political leaders, community organizations and businesses and the media! Last year we had over 400 attendees. Our goal for 2015 is to get as many people involved in the event and spread a positive message in our community about the importance of looking after our planet.
EarthFest is led by grade 4 and 5 students in Campus View’s Green Team. Together with staff and parent volunteers, the students design work stations that are fun and have an environmental theme, such as Recycle Relay, Guess how long to Biodegrade and Grow your own plant! This year Bob McDonald, CBC National Science Commentator and host of Quirks & Quarks will be in attendance as well as our MLA, Andrew Weaver, among others (TBA). As our school stands on Coast and Straits Salish land, we are also honoured with the presence of Saanich elder, Earl Claxton Jr. who shares traditional teachings and ethnobotany with participants of the event. We are also holding a bike rally to the University of Victoria and back to kick off the event (Bike rally 3:00- 3:30).
The students are currently working on EarthFest 2015 to make it our best event yet. They are also working on their own vision for what environmental initiatives they would like to see in their own community. These are the leaders of the future and they would love to have your support!
Bring your own plate, utensils and cups (local food samples available for a small $ donation), and enthusiasm for a fun celebration of the planet and local ecosystems!
