The sites to monitor are in the following areas:
The Kick-Off Bat Count (Training) Event happens on SUNDAY MAY 28th starting at 7:15pm. This is open to EVERYONE, and mandatory for anyone new to monitoring this summer or if you want to be a Team Leader and have not been so before.
Meet at the Helmcken Road Park & Ride parking lot (at 7:15pm) for an orientation (talk about our local bats, HAT's bat program & the monitoring protocol)
Carpool to Beaver Lake (head out by 8pm)
Practice count (9-9:30pm, depending on bats)
* It is always important to arrive at the site a good 10-15min before sunset to get settled
Return to parking lot (by 10pm)
Please bring water, a snack, warm clothing, and a counting device (for those of you with a smart phone you can download an app counter, otherwise we will bring a bunch of manual counters to distribute for the evening). We will also print off a bunch of data forms for us to review and practice using.
Moving forward, Bat Coordinator Katie Bell will organize all committed volunteers into groups, with each group responsible for monitoring a different site. Each group will be led by a Team Leader who will contact his/her teammates to coordinate each count evening as the summer progresses. A reminder, each site needs to be counted (at least) four times throughout the summer, specifically two during June 1-21 and two during July 21-August 15. The June counts are top priority! Also, note that we do NOT go out on nights that are rainy or windy as bats do not leave their roosts in bad weather.
Please note that EVERYONE needs to sign a liability waiver to participate in the count, even if you/a friend/family member only participates for one night.
IN THE EVENT OF BAD WEATHER we will meet at the HAT office (825 Broughton Street, Mezzanine level) instead of the Helmecken Road Park & Ride. Look for an email by 4pm on Sunday May 28th to confirm any change in location.
