Slug and Slime Walk

March 31 2023

On an early spring morning in March, HAT and CRD naturalists led a group of keen individuals through the forests of Devonian Park, crouching low and scouring the ground, in search of small, slimy animals. Often overlooked in our ecosystems, HAT and CRD naturalists aimed to shed some light on slugs!

24 people came out to learn about the different species of slugs that South Vancouver Island hosts, their importance in the ecosystem, the purpose of their slime, and their life history. Slugs are invaluable for our ecosystems, as decomposers, mycorrhizal fungi diffusers, and nutrient cyclers.

Thanks to CRD Naturalists for co-hosting with HAT, and for everyone who participated. We have another event with CRD Naturalists this spring, from 7-8:30 on May 31st at Elk/Beaver Lake Park. We will be discussing the bats of British Columbia, and taking a look at the Elk/Beaver Lake bat boxes. Hope to see you there!
