HAT Launches Collaborative Pilot Project with District of Saanich

The District of Saanich and Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) are excited to announce the launch of a new collaborative pilot project, Good Neighbours: Saanich Biodiversity Partners. This initiative aims to provide Saanich residents in a specific geographic area with additional support to enhance backyard stewardship and boost local biodiversity.

Funded by a specialized grant from Environment and Climate Change Canada, this project will support landholders in their efforts to foster backyard biodiversity. The pilot project will run until March 31, 2025.

Who is Eligible for Support?

The project will initially focus on 200 residents in the areas surrounding Marigold Park, Knockan Hill Park, South Valley Park, Dunbar Park, Copley West and East Parks, and the south end of Quick’s Bottom Park. Residents within this focus area may be eligible for site visits and support. Eligible properties will fall within the red area in the map below or view on google maps.

How to Become a Biodiversity Partner

Residents interested in participating are encouraged to complete a brief survey, which takes approximately 7 to 10 minutes. The survey asks questions about land care practices and opinions. Those who complete the survey by November 30 will be entered into a prize draw for a $50 Gift Card to Satinflower Nurseries.

What Support Will Look Like

Support for eligible residents may include:

  • Individualized on-site stewardship consultations

  • Site reports with goals, recommended actions, and resources

  • Hands-on training in effective stewardship techniques

  • Experiential stewardship workshops and walks
